How do I pay GST/HST?

I am a self employed consultant working on commission. I bill a company quarterly for my service.

Do I pay GST/HST on the total amount?

Hi Richard,

When learning a new skill, it takes research and practice. Look over my chat on A Guide to GST/HST Registration in Canada.

Hi There,

What I know is that if your one year commission is over C$30,000, then you should be collecting (charging) the HST based on your commission.

This requires you to register with CRA to get your HST number. After you are registered, all your commission invoices should charge HST.

Consultant To A U.S. Supplier

I have a consulting company in Ontario and just got a US contract in Canadian funds to provide sales support to its Canadian customers.

Do I need to charge the US company HST or not? They will be supplying me with a 1099 at the end of the contract. I am only providing training and support.

Work your way through Deloitte's place of supply flowchart for services. If you are still not sure, ask CRA for a ruling or speak with your accountant.
